The crew is haggard in the morning — temps dropped down to 36 overnight and nobody slept well, aside from Laura. In fact, the only restful sleep I managed was between 5:45am-7:30, when Laura wakes me up to tell me I am late for breakfast.
I slurp as much scalding coffee as I can, pack lunch [...]

Last weekend, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA) and Trout Unlimited Chapter 678 (Upper Willamette-McKenzie) tackled barbed wire removal in the Steens Mountain wilderness.
I updated the blog sporadically from my Eastern Oregon roadtrip, detailing the project. Check out all of the Steens Mountain Photos. Also, check out all five days of my stay at Steens Mountain.

I just finished two books about deliberately supporting our local economic infrastructures to save the environment, foster community and happiness and to live healthier. The books: Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology and Deep Economy point out how hard it is for most of us to actually do this without a lot of consideration.

The afternoon started normal enough, I met up with Karl in Springfield, got the gear together and shuttled to the Hayden Bridge ramp. When we got there, a couple of scuba divers were getting ready to swim out into the [...]

I’ve been on the road for the past two weeks – running family members back and forth across the Beaver State, from Bandon to Crater Lake — Florence to Sisters. I’ll be traveling to Steens and some Cascade high lakes over the next couple weeks.
All these sites are great, and I’ve done a lot of great [...]

I just finished Rory Stewart’s second book, Prince of the Marshes. He might be one of the heroic figures of my generation. I don’t feel I could add any commentary to the two books he has written, I only reccomend that you read them. Stewart’s books will inspire you to take responsibility for the shaping [...]

Tonight I went out with KP to a remote spot on the Willamette in order to shoot some photos and try to catch some trout that I’d heard were coming up from a certain reservoir and into the stream. I brought a handful of small fish (top photo) to the surface with a size 10 Madam X in the [...]
