Book recommendation: Pale Morning Done

I wrapped up Pale Morning Done last week while I was on the road, and I give it a hearty B+. It’s a great read — both for its fish-porn aspect and life lessons for a guy in his twenties. Marshall (who seems a bit old to be learning these things, in my opinion) finds out the hard way:

  • Impressing the old man is an obsession that overrules better judgment, leading to glory or ruin. You will judge yourself and be judged by your old man. Best to recognize your motives.
  • Attractive female friends are a disaster waiting to happen.
  • You cannot enter a fight after a certain age unless it is worth going to jail or the hospital.

There is also a really great scene, where the old rancher comes to the conclusion that the world belongs to yuppies with fly rods. Agriculture is backbreaking work, the kids aren’t going to do it, and Cargill is going to put you out of business — might as well grow trout. Probably not realistic, but hopeful — at least to those who can afford fishing private creeks.
