November fly fishing on the Willamette rocks my socks off

It’s way late in the season for trout, but an unseasonably dry couple of weeks in Oregon has put a pause in the anadromous fish action on the coast. I figured the past few sunny days and +50 temperatures would be enough to get trout moving on the Middle Fork and roped a skeptical Karl into chasing them.

We headed straight to Oakridge, post-brunch time to catch the heat of the day. And we hooked about fifteen fish in and above Salmon Creek. Karl pulled a couple of fish on dry flies, but most of the fish were caught on a possy bugger on an indicator.

There were a few October Caddis around and I caught a whitefish. You can see from the first shot that I’m pretty surprised to be catching fish at all.

Those are some chunkers, nice! October caddis are one of my favorite ‘trout food’ bugs. Imitating pupae coming to the surface have given me some of the most vicious strikes I’ve ever received from trout.

I dispute your account of this trip! Many fish were caught on a #16 wet cahill and a couple were caught on a Prince including that nice wild fish in Salmon. Time to start my own blog dedicate to . . . the truth.

Oh yeah, that capilene baselayer came in the mail yesterday and so far it is awesome. The guide jacket is scheduled for arrival today. I hope that it is awesome too. I’ll keep you posted.

Are you wearing Capilene around the house while you spank your kids and drink beer?

  5. Karl says:

Yep, you nailed it. That’s how I confirmed it dries quickly.

What’s the point of drinking beer and spanking your kids if you can’t even get a decent beer/armpit stain on the Capilene?
