Great Lakes steelhead party back home in Ohio

Home for the weekend back east in Ohio, Nate, Chums and I tackled the winter steelhead on the Great Lakes tributaries. We got about 5 inches of snow last night and the ice was forming in our rod guides and gumming up the line. Nate caught the fish in the video below and I hooked a monster but it broke off my 6lb test Orvis Flourocarbon, which just didn’t hold up. It wasn’t that old either, could’ve been the cold temps. These fish don’t fight long in those super cold temps, but they’re beautiful.

Six # Flouro? I wouldn’t trust twently # in that crap. Of course maybe I was letting my knots get hot supposedly a flouro sin.

    Mono rules!

  2. onemuleteam says:

Did you lube the knot? Supposedly that is key with flouro a little spittle keeps it from getting too hot and weakening. Too high maintenance for my taste. Flouro v. mono–There’s a woman analogy in there somewhere but . . .

Anyway, did I ever tell you about the time I broke off five steelhead over the course of 2 trips with 12 # flouro? Probably not, too painful to recall.

Nice fish Nate! Is that a bugger in that fish’s mouth?

That is a Black Bugger….! You shake it at them and they hit it… It is pretty weird, but works.
