Chester blows the family budget

We’ve been saving up to do some stuff around the house, like paint it. Or remove the giant, half-dead Oregon Ash looming hundreds of feet over our roof in the backyard. Or redoing our kitchen. But instead, we’ve spent all of our money attempting to save Chester.

He’s a barfer. What cat isn’t right? But he hasn’t been able to keep any food down for the past week. He’s waking up in the middle of the night to puke up yellow and pink bile, and he’s very stressed out. He wants to eat, he’s so hungry. But can’t keep anything down.

So he’s spent a few days in the hospital getting fluids pumped into him at $300 a day, and finally today we pulled the trigger on exploratory surgery to make sure the cat isn’t blocked up with a mega furball (or worse, fly tying materials). And they found nothing.

At this point, I’m estimating I’ve spent 5% of my pre-tax annual income on the cat. He’s spending the night in the hospital, hooked up to an IV and taking anti-nausea drugs. Hopefully it’ll go away on its own. Say a prayer to whatever cat-loving god you believe in for Chester, because I don’t know how much more of this I’m going to be able to take before I let him either puke himself to death on our kitchen floor or put him down.

Awful situation, Matt. I hate to think of a similar decision with my own buddy.

You might set up a donation button for Chester’s care with a WordPress plugin:

Let your readers help share your burden, unless your dear cat’s quality of life simply can’t be maintained.

Prayers sent to both him & your growing fam.

I’m so sorry to hear about Chester… The kitchen’s functional and ain’t going anywhere (if that’s any consolation…)

I hope they figure out what’s the matter with him soon…

Hey man, I loved Chester’s 2AM dancing in front of the fire when I last slept on the couch. My thoughts and prayers are with him, and even Tecumseh says get better Chester!

It’s been a week since you posted about Chester’s expensive mystery ailment… I hope he is doing better
now. I don’t know which of the kitties in the photo he
is, but they are both adorable.

Hi Matt. I like your blog and check it out often (I’m a beginner fly fisher 8>) …but this entry really got me because my cat was very ill a few months ago and it was very intense emotionally and monetarily so I feel your struggle. I will say prayers for chester and his family. btw, loved the recent story of braving the mild weather. cheers.
