My new favorite poet: Gerald Stern

I go through favorite poets the way most people go through bags of cheese doodles. Like once a week. My current favorite is Gerald Stern (sorry Chuck, my old fave). So here are a few of my favorite lines.

I am sick of the country, the bloodstained
bumpers, the stiff hairs sticking out of the grilles,
the slimy highways, the heavy birds
refusing to move;
(from Behaving Like a Jew)

–The blue jay is youth, right? —
clawing his chin, stuffing his belly, fighting the dove, fighting the owl,
filling the lawns and woods with his violent sounds.
(from The Poem of Life)

Please read more poems. Thanks.
